The Pashupatinath temple, is a famous, sacred Hindu temple located at the banks of Bagmati river 5 kilometers north-east of the Kathmandu valley in the eastern city of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. It is considered as one of the sacred temples in Hindu faith and serves as the seat of national deity, Lord Pashupatinath. The temple complex was enlisted in the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites’ list since 1979. During Maha Shivaratri, one of the major Hindu festivals, over 70,000 devotees visit the temple. The Jyotirlinga at thePashupatinath is considered as the head of Lord Shiva.


Pashuptinath is the oldest Hindu temple in Kathmandu. It is not known for certain when the Pashupatinath temple was built. But according to Nepal Mahatmaya and Himvatkhanda, the deity here, gained great fame as Pashupati, the Lord of all pashus, which are living as well as non-living beings. The temple's existence dates back to 400 B.C. There are several legends surrounding the origin of the Pashupatinath.
